Super Finishing

Isotropic polishing or super finishing is a process which removes small machining imperfections from ferrous metal parts. When you look at a crank bearing journal you soon notice that the machining process leaves longitudinal marks on the surface and in fact if you looked at em under a microscope you would see that all the marks go in one direction; it looks like mountain range.

Isotropic which means identical in all directions, removes the machining marks so that oil is encouraged to move to the outside edges of the bearings and creates a more stable and even oil film on the bearing surface. That reduces wear and the chances under extreme conditions of bearing failure.

Gears equally benefit from isotropic polishing by smoothing the gear teeth and gear root. This reduces friction and liberates power and removes unwanted stress raisers allowing the gear teeth to flex and not break. It is not uncommon for engines and transmissions to run lighter oils aiding horsepower liberation. Parts run smoother, last longer and run cooler. An added benefit is that non- bearing engine parts are often polished to a very smooth and slippery surface aiding oil shedding reducing parasitic loss. Every major race team in every major race series treats their parts this way because they know the benefits. Originally used and developed by the aerospace industry the science behind it is undeniable.

Most engine and transmission parts benefit from this process that includes valve springs, rocker gear, pushrods – the list goes on and in fact if you were to look inside a nascar or V8 supercar you would see a lot of shiny polished engine parts.
